The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Odisha to offer all its academic programmes in the Odia language. This step promotes regional language learning and supports students who prefer studying in their mother tongue. IGNOU plans to translate textbooks, study materials, and video lectures into Odia to enhance accessibility.
The MoU was signed in Bhubaneswar in the presence of senior officials from both IGNOU and the state government. The translation process starts with popular programmes like BA, B.Com, and MA. IGNOU also sets up a dedicated team in Odisha to monitor the translation and delivery process.
This move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages higher education in regional languages. The university believes that this will improve the enrolment and retention of students from rural and tribal areas in Odisha.
