NEET PG Answer Key vs Response Sheet: What is the difference?
The NEET PG answer key and response sheet serve different purposes. The answer key tells candidates which answer NBEMS considers correct, while the response sheet shows the option actually marked by the candidate.
Candidates need both to understand their question-wise performance. The official information is more reliable than recalling answers from memory after completing the NEET PG 2026 paper.
The difference between the NEET PG answer key and response sheet is provided below.
| NEET PG answer key | NEET PG response sheet |
|---|---|
| Shows correct answer IDs | Shows recorded response IDs |
| Released by NBEMS | Candidate-specific |
| Used to verify answers | Used to verify actual attempts |
| Shows accepted answers | Shows options selected |
| Helps verify marks | Helps identify correct and incorrect responses |
How to calculate the NEET PG 2026 score using the answer key?
Candidates can calculate their probable NEET PG score by counting correct and incorrect responses after comparing the official answer key with the response sheet. NEET PG 2026 has 180 questions for a maximum of 720 marks.
The official marking system gives 4 marks for every correct response, deducts 1 mark for every incorrect response, and gives zero marks for an unattempted question. Candidates should calculate correct and incorrect answers separately before using the score formula.
The NEET PG answer key can be matched with recorded responses before applying the marking scheme. The NEET PG score formula is provided below.
NEET PG Score = (Number of correct answers × 4) − (Number of incorrect answers × 1)
For example, suppose a candidate has:
| Response | Number | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Correct | 130 | 130 × 4 = 520 |
| Incorrect | 40 | 40 × 1 = -40 |
| Unattempted | 10 | 0 |
| Expected score | – | 480/720 |
The candidate’s estimated score would therefore be 480 marks out of 720. The calculation is useful for estimation, but the official NBEMS result remains final.
NEET PG 2026 marking scheme
Understanding the NEET PG 2026 marking scheme is necessary before calculating scores from the response sheet. The NEET PG 2026 paper contained 180 MCQs carrying a total of 720 marks.
Negative marking applies only to incorrect responses. Questions left unattempted receive zero marks, so candidates should not deduct marks for unanswered questions while calculating their expected score.
The NEET PG 2026 marking scheme is provided below.
| Response | Marks |
|---|---|
|
Correct answer |
+4 |
|
Incorrect answer |
-1 |
|
Unattempted answer |
0 |
|
Total questions |
180 |
|
Maximum marks |
720 |
Can candidates challenge the NEET PG Answer Key 2026?
NBEMS stated that the examination questions and answer keys had already been reviewed by subject experts for technical correctness. If a formal objection facility is announced, candidates should follow only the procedure, deadline, and payment rules published by NBEMS.
Candidates should check the following details after the objection window is announced:
- objection start and closing date
- question ID being challenged
- supporting academic reference
- objection fee, if applicable
- payment procedure
- final-answer-key process
Official NEET PG answer key vs. memory-based answer key
Memory-based NEET PG answer keys are prepared from questions recalled by candidates and discussed by coaching institutes or subject experts. These can provide an early idea of performance, but the wording of recalled questions or options may differ from the actual examination.
The official NEET PG Answer Key 2026 issued by NBEMS should be treated as the authoritative source for score checking. Candidates should recalculate their expected score after the official responses become available, even if they have already used a coaching answer key.
A memory-based NEET PG question paper may have different wording or options because it is prepared from student recall. The main difference is listed below.
| Official answer key | Memory-based answer key |
|---|---|
|
Issued by NBEMS |
Prepared by coaching institutes/experts |
|
Uses official question IDs |
Based mainly on recalled questions |
|
Suitable for official score checking |
Useful only for early estimation |
|
Correct answers determined by NBEMS |
Answers may vary between sources |
NEET PG Result 2026 date: What happens after the answer key?
The NEET PG 2026 result is scheduled to be declared by September 30, 2026. Candidates will receive their official score and rank through the NBEMS result process, and the final result should be used for counselling-related decisions rather than an answer-key estimate.
After the result, qualified candidates move towards the counselling process for eligible MD, MS, and other participating postgraduate medical seats. Candidates can use their answer-key score only as an early indication while waiting for the official score and rank.
Latest update on NEET PG 2026 answer Key and response Sheet
The NEET PG Answer Key 2026 and response sheet are awaited as of September 16, 2026. Once released, candidates will be able to compare their recorded responses with the correct answers and calculate an expected score using the +4, -1, and zero marking scheme.
